What is everyone doing for when you close the tailgate and keep from the paint getting chipped for metal on metal? I'm guessing some type of gromet? but I don't see where one might go.

hey greg, hows it goin....its very tight.. i belive the gromet your talkin about will push the tailgate out too much.. I thought of one of those flat hood gomets.. just wondering if someone came up with somthing

Re: tail gate question

The ones that were on the IH stuck out a quarter of a inch...since they dont make new ones for it I had to get what I could...new ones I got stick out a half inch...I'm just gonna sand them down thinner once I get everything done..

How about a few of those clear rubber stick on things for cabinet doors?

Being inside of the tailgate like that, they probably won't see much sun or the power washer.

as you said, To thick of a rubber grommet you may not be able to close the tailgate completely. I had to grind down the height of a pair I had that were for the hood of my 40 ford.

Re: tail gate question

the little rubber bumpers from a modern fuel door may work. some are solid rubber so they could be trimmed down to the thickness you want. they fit into a small hole as well.

some foam tape on the vertical section of the box, in the bend area, may also work and not look unsightly if done well. like weatherstripping you can buy at home depot in different thickness. if you don't like it just peel it off.it will hold water though, like a sponge.

I used foam tape that was 3/16” thick.
It squished down to 1/8”.
Made the strips about an inch long.
Works great!
Don’t drive it in the rain, so not a problem!

I like to use clear rubber dots.

There are different styles and sizes so there's probably one that fits what you need.

thanks all for the responses. the clear cabinet style is a good idea but I am afraid with living in Florida and the summer heat it will heat up the adhesive and fall off. So I came up with this, I'll pass it on maybe someone else can use it ... it a hood gromet cut down and slightly hit with the grinder to thin it up a bit. drilled a 5/16 " hole and put in

The rubber bumpers for the glove box door are pretty small and may work too.

Looks great Mike. I tried the adhesive ones here and like you said, they fall off. would only be sooner there in Florida.

I used the green stick on felt dots they sell for cabinet doors. My truck is always in the garage so they should stick for awhile though not forever.
