Rear shocks
 

What would you recommend for shocks on a shortbed with coils in the rear and utility fenders?

I replaced shocks a couple years ago because of the bounce, but it didn't go away.

What brand & quality were the replacements?
What are the trucks specs?

It could be the shock angle on the rear shocks. Stock they laid down too flat to work correctely. No Limit.net makes a relocation kit to fix that problem.

1971 Chevy c10. Short box with toolbox bed. Rear suspension is coil type. Stock height

I ended up ordering some heavy duty shocks. Hopefully they help. If not I may go with the relocation kit.

No need to order a relocation kit, just swap the lower shock mounts side to side, use front-fitment shocks, and the upper shock stud that comes with new front shocks. Drill the frame rail to mount the upper stud.

I did this on my '66 with coil springs and it rode and drove great! The shocks can control the body motion much better with them outboard of the frame and standing straight up.

I assume this would work just the same with the 67-72 trucks?

Yes, I relocated the shocks on my '69 this way.

The '69 brackets didn't have to be redrilled if I remember correctly.

So you used the original 67-72 lower brackets on your 69?

Yes, stock 67-72 brackets. Just flipped side to side, not redrilled.

I bought a pair from korinek on the board that are from a 66 to put on my 68 if they will fit. I like how the lower shock bolt is captured on both sides. Will likely need to redrill the holes though.

I got my brackets and feel pretty good about these working out as I want them to. I might redrill the hole to make the shock be in better alignment with the upper frame mount but unsure at this point. I plan on running ridetech HQ shocks so I am hopeful that they fit inside the mounting tabs.

If I recall correctly, those that re-use the OE style brackets do re-drill one hole for better alignment w/the upper located mount.
Not sure it was a 'must-do' thing though.

Thanks Scoti, I hope the OP doesn’t mind. I have asked no limit if I could purchase their upper mounts only but will make an upper mount if needed. I might bolt directly to the frame as well if all lines up well and possibly make a reinforcement plate. I am waiting on my hotchkis max swivel bushings to proceed, ordered them on 9/20 through summit.

I see nothing wrong w/the stud-in-frame upper mount. It works on the front just fine w/a bunch more weight.
Nice/good choice on the swivel bushings. Sucks you're still waiting though.

Yes, the waiting is getting old. Holding up progress at this point, and I won’t be able to measure shock length until I get the bushings and trailing arms mounted. I think I will mount to the frame but will likely make a 3/16” thick 3x3 plate to basically reinforce the frame. Drill a hole in both the frame and new plate for the shock stud to pass through and attach the 3x3 plate with grade 8 bolts and call it done.

Sure won't hurt anything having a reinforcement.
