Cutting floor for hi hump tunnel ?
im going to be cutting my floor soon. looking for any pointers as to what to expect.. what tool did you use to cut ?
|
Re: Cutting floor for hi hump tunnel ?
A cutting disc such as a Lennox metalmax is a much better choice than the abrasive discs.....
Or use a sawzall or body saw...depends on what tools you have.. |
Re: Cutting floor for hi hump tunnel ?
I did mine with a plasma cutter. Laid the high hump down. Traced around it then cut about 3/4"-1" inside the line. Cleaned up the cut with an angle grinder.

Re: Cutting floor for hi hump tunnel ?
A plasma cutter would be the cats meow, but I can't afford one. I used a cutting disc on an angle grinder. I also used a smaller disc on my die grinder in some spots. I would go for it and then just clean up the edges with a grinder.

Yeah the plasma is great. If you want nice radius corners just use a hole saw 1" diameter? in each corner and connect the dots with a sabre saw.

I placed my high hump on and drilled the holes in the floor then welded 3/8" flange nuts on the cab before I cut the hole. I cut the hole with a die grinder/cutoff wheel. It was pretty simple but I did have my cab on a rotisserie...

Make sure there isn't anything under where you are cutting!
I used a combo of a cut off disc and an air body saw from harbor freight. |

Here's what I did to my 71 swb low hump. A bit unorthodox, but I wanted to assure no interference for my build. I was going to use a high hump, but still had some issues, so I made the change to fabricate a custom hump.
