Air Intake Routing
 

Few questions - dont want to spend $70 on parts to not fit ....

Q1)
The throttle body intake is 4". The Mass Air Flow Sensor is like 3.625" (pic below)

So that would mean I need a 4" silocne bend..... a 4" pipe ..... then an adapter from 4" to 3.6" on one side of the MAF and a a 4" to 3.5" (intake filter) adapter on other side of MAF.

The ideal spot is really on the drivers side fender - but thats where I have the PCM mounted. I could move it - but obviously cant move far.

Was thinking if I routed it over the radiator hose sort of like one of these .....


Thoughts ?

I used a spectre reducing coupling from throttle to maf..then the maf..then a spectre 90..then a Ebay alum tube with spectre filter at the end...had no issues and lots of miles..

I dont think I can route quite like yours due to AC. Theres' 5" total between back of electric fan and accessory drive belt ...... with a 4" pipe .... kinda tight.

I've got a maf...and this could have just as easily went to the drivers side..
I put mine there be ause that's where the air flow thru the radiator support was..
.I was mainly showing how mines connected

Ended up buying a generic kit (as was cheaper tha sourcing individually)
and I'll modify to fit as required.

Routes over the hose to the passenger side, where the battery was originally. I'm interested to see how well it will fit over there. For the price I figured it was worth a gamble.

Pretty much what I just bought - amazon.

Im going to try and route around the alternator side ..... might have to buy some other parts to make work ........ but a filter alone was $30. So figured heck.

I had the same problem. I had some plastic that was between a 16th and an 8th thick and I cut a strip and wrapped it around and glued it to bring it up close to the 4" I needed.

Pic of my routing. I had to buy an elbow with one leg long enough to clear the alternator. I like that the filter helps to hide the pcm/wires a bit. Sorry for the upside down pic, iPhone pics seem to do that.

Heres what I ended up with.
To get the configuration of the abvove pics Id have to spend another $40 in adapters .... and cut the tube way down .... just probably not worth it.

Kit is ok for the $$........ dont love it dont hate it. The filter is better quality than I thought but the adpaters are pretty cheap as expected.

Yeah my adapters are pretty cheap as well. I don’t have it totally together yet but also didn’t include something for the Maf-to-filter... the filter connector is just sort of ‘fingers’ that close when you clamp them? I saw on amazon that spectre has a 4 to 3-1/2 adapter for $10, might pick that up as well.

Yeah that adapter piece is really pretty bad. I think i can get mine to work b y putting a 4" straight piece over the pipe and clamping to that ...... worst case a bit of black rtv gasket sealer around teh outside or something to help hold in place.

Dang thats clean.
I didnt really think much on keeping engine bay tidy when I did everything. 1st time build.

I think if I do again ...... Id relocate the battery to alongside the frame and hide the AC lines and wiring harness behind the fender.

The powersteering lines for the hydroboost are hard to hide though.

The best source of couplers and reducers I've found is siliconhoses.com

I routed my intake down the side of radiator - it sits vertically in the engine compartment with the end of the K&N filter fitting in a bracket so it is supported at both ends

Pretty much. There's a 'cup' mounted on the radiator support that holds the end of the filter and keeps the intake in place.

FWIW I had a new toy a couple of years ago that was a thermocouple temperature probe. I put the TC in various locations in the engine bay and didn't see much temperature variation as I drove around.

The filter hides behind the fan shroud and is about even with the crank pulley on the engine. I doubt this truck will ever see rain, much less water that'd be high enough to get sucked in the filter, but I suppose it is a possibility.
