1962 GMC 910 4x4
 

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some info on a truck I will be buying to breath some life into my project. If anyone that knows a thing or two about Canadian GMCs.. The truck I’m buying is a 62 GMC 910 and it’s on a 4x4 frame. It’s been sitting for 30+ years and I only have a VIN to go off of. I will be picking up the truck tomorrow but it’s 10 hours away so can’t get anymore info until I pick it up.

Here's what I know going off the VIN:
2: 1962
C:Should be 2wd but may be 4x4?
9: Canadian GMC
15: 127'WB
34: Long box fleetside
6:Inline 6 engine probably a 235ci
14040: Assembly #
A: Should be 5200GVW

From what I’ve gathered online is that the 60-66 4x4 frames were all the same just a bit of different locations for some suspension components. I also know that like most other Canadian versions this truck is basically a Chevy with GMC badging on it. Is there a location on the frame that I can check the ID to match it to the body to confirm if it was built as a 4x4? Going off this site: http://www.oeltd.net/doc/6066gmc/VINs/gmc-canada.htm I cannot see any 4x4 models being produced for the Canadian market from 60-62. Maybe I’ve stumbled on a rarity? Anyway, any additional info I can gather would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a cab swap before you got it?

I have a 61 and there is not a VIN number stamped anywhere on the frame. I read that the GMC's are like that.
The alternate place I'm told to check is above or the top of the frame just below the driver side.
I looked using a mirror but found nothing. Your results may be different. Check there and let us know.

All I'm going to say is look very closely at how the VIN tag is attached. That should answer your question.

Cool truck,hope the mods don't close this thread down due to vin "tempering" is illegal. Should be a fun build.

With the second digit being a C not a K it is highly unlikely that truck was originally built as a 4x4. You're probably right that there weren't any factory built 4x4's in Canada until 1963.

There is a service in Canada that will decode the VIN for you and tell you how the truck was originally built.

On Canadian trucks there is a number stamped in the frame which corresponds with the VIN. My truck has it but I just can't remember how many numbers it has. It's on the driver's side of the frame.

I do agree that the VIN looks to have been tampered with because of the elongated holes, but I would like to see some good, straight on pictures of those rivets. I don't know exactly what year the Canadian built trucks started using the rosette rivets but I do know the early ones used round rivets with a large center hole. I've seen them on every 60-63 I've looked at including my own two.

EDIT:Just looked at my truck, and the one in the pic really looks like standard pop rivets.

Another thing, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought they started doing the partial VIN stamp on the frame in 63 for the Canadian trucks.

On the topic of the frame, the cab mount brackets changed in 63.Don't know if anything else did or not.

I think you might be right. I may have misspoke when I said this truck would have that number stamped in the frame. I know more about the 63-66 trucks than I do the 60-62's.

I think you are correct. I understand they narrowed the frame in '63. So 60-62 trucks have same frame and 63-66 are the same.

Looking at the rivets in the picture I have to agree, this may have been vin swapped... I do not plan to use this cab as I will be using another cab that I've had for years. The rivets on the other cab look stock. Either way, I picked the truck up last Friday. Upon seeing it I can tell it's not the stock frame for this truck. I'm now just trying to determine if its a 63-66 or 67-70 4x4 frame. This week I'll clean it up(30 years worth of mouse droppings) then get to measuring the frame and trying to start it up.

Judging based on the frame horns, it looks like it's probably a 63-66 frame

I'm hoping that's the case. Either way I'll switch over to my build thread here. My other truck's pictures are there. I can't wait to get this project underway!
