Black Oxide Bolts

In the middle of some TLC updates on my C-10. As I have the front end apart and don't want to buy new bolts, I was looking at wire brushing them and then coating them with a black oxide coating.
Does anyone have experience doing this?

When you click the link in that thread it will bring you to a page not found on the caswell website. In the header at the top you will see black oxide where the solutions are there.

Buy new bolts. It's a lot easier and cheaper than glass beading and phosphate
coating your originals by far.

My experience has been the complete opposite and for black phos all I've ever done is knock back gross deposits of debris from the parts with good results. I've got a batch out for plating right now.

It's typical that shops have a minimum rate and that typically gets you pounds of plated fasteners, latches, hinges, etc.

I got a bottle of Jax for my birthday and it works well. You don’t need the kit, just the blackening agent you can finish them with WD40 or penetrating oil.

I've redone OEM bolts using the same method as 70STOVEBOLT with good results. If you have a bead blaster or wire wheel then this is a good option. I bought a pint of Caswell Black Oxide Concentrate and use WD40 as the sealer. Here's a good video from Cuda Cody on the process:

I've also bought replacement OE-style bolts in bulk at good prices.

Thanks, I don't think I'll be doing any more black phosphate unless it is a few odd fasteners.
