axle swap 5 bolt pattern into 67 12bolt
anyone know if the axles from 71-72 5 bolt pattern will fit/work in the 67-70 12 bolt housings? is the axle splines and length the same?
|
They aren't a direct fit. They are 3/4" wider each. I think the spline count is the same. I know some board members have done this but used some kind of spacer for the extra length. I would do that personally.
I have 5 lug conversion axles for my 68. I got it from ECE. They make axles that are the right width. |
what do the ECE axles set ya back,
and I've heard early model 71 used a different width axle housing that matches the width of the 67-70's not confirmed |
Rooster, I think that both ECE & Classic Perf Parts both sell 5 lug conversion axles so you might do some comparison shopping. I believe CCP's kit is axles & drums for 3 bills. I bought better axles from Moser & got drums for a 72 @ Autozone.

Rooster, you're close.
It's the 70s that can go either way. There was a running change during production to wider axles. The later axles will fit in the early housings, but like was said, they are too long by 3/4 inch. What some guys are doing is fabricating a 3/4 inch spacer that goes between the axle housing flange and the brake backing plate. Then bolt the backing plate on with long bolts. This effectively moves the brakes out 3/4 inch to line up with the longer axles. |
Nah I'll use the correct length stuff.
they were engineered for the load rating with the flange, and wheel contact in a specific place, ya know. and I have been known to haul stuff around. |
