700R4 decoding help?
Does anyone know where to find the codes for a 700R4? I have two 700R4's and am trying to figure out the differences between them and decide which one I should use. The pad on the right rear corner reads 4YP061C on one, and 5VG353B on the other.

Re: 700R4 decoding help?
Those would be '84 and '85 units. See here...
https://mechanicbase.com/transmissio...-transmission/ I just went through sourcing one of these transmissions and have been told by a few tranny folks that the one you want will be newer than an 87 unit...something to do with upgrades that GM made as the years progressed that made them better. I guess the new models would be better, but the 85 model that was in my K20 seemed to do fine until I broke a corner of the tail housing when separating the transfer case. My advice would be to find a newer one of you are building something above stock horsepower or to use beyond daily driver status. |

If it's 2wd the newer ones will have a VSS and metal gear instead of the plastic gear and mechanical drive for the speedometer.

Re: 700R4 decoding help?
Thanks Sick, I see the year coding but there's no breakdown for the model code (which I think is the two letters after the year). But maybe I'm asking the wrong question—are both of my transmissions identical? I was assuming some difference in performance (gearing, strength) depending on the application (a pickup vs a Camaro for example), but maybe I'm wrong... Are they all built and geared the same way? If so I'll just pick the better condition one. This will be going behind a mildly built small block, not a pavement pounder.

Re: 700R4 decoding help?
The older ones have weaker internal parts.

Re: 700R4 decoding help?
According to the PDF I linked...
The 4YP is from a 1984 5.0L "F"-CAR and the 5VG is from a 1985 4.3L "C"-TRUCK/"G"-VANS (Calif) My guess is that these transmissions are basically equivalent, key word "guess". |
Re: 700R4 decoding help?
Use the 85, It is the 2nd version of the 700R4/4L60 transmission with a 30 Spline input shaft. The 82-84 had a 27 spline input shaft. Internal gear Ratios are the same in all transmissions.
