Gas tank question

I have a 61 C10 longbed fleetside. I am going to install a gas tank under the bed. I was thinking of using a a 31 gallon 73-81 suburban gas tank. I know I will need to relocate one of the crossmembers to make it fit. My question is, will the 63-66 suburban sending unit fit the 73-81 tank, so I have the correct ohm sending unit for my gauges?

I think the older tank is a 5 bolt pattern and the newer is 6 bolt so...

Re: Gas tank question

I was looking at the tanks and sending units from classicparts. They seem to be the style that use a locking ring instead of bolts. Maybe they are using a generic photo for the product.

That tank holds lot of gas which is nice, but won't it hang pretty low?

Re: Gas tank question

Probably for most people it would hang too low. But I am leaving my truck at stock height, and I don't care if the tank is visible or not. I think I am going to go with a mustang style tank from Tanks Inc instead, because of the sending unit bolt pattern issues. It will cost more than Classic Parts, but I will be able to do what I wanted.

I decided to go with a suburban 31 gallon tank and modify it with parts from Tanks Inc. I did a mock-up of a suburban 40 gallon tank 35"x29"13" with the rear cross-member moved to the very end of the frame. The tank fits, but is too close to the relocated tracking bar mount.
