67 SWB Steering question

So my 67 and in a frame off state. I have a L31 and tranny from a 96 Siiverado both were crate buys and have 30K on them. So PS pump is a 96, I want to buy a tilt column. If I buy a new steering box and column what would be a good way to go? I have the original steering box but didnt want to limit myself. I dont wwant to skimp out but also dont want to go broke. lol Thanks for your help!

This info is worth what you paid for it.

I would use a 1980-1986 steering box. It has the metric threads and O ring.

It will bolt up you need to dimple the frame where the box mounts there are threads on it

Kind of off topic, what is the deal with 1967 trucks that had factory power steering. How did the gear mount up if the frame need dimpled?

Or, are the 67 steering gears different? Maybe like the aftermarket ones now that don't need the dimple?

Re: 67 SWB Steering question

67 had power assist steering not a power box.

67 Steering looks just like in this thread. I believe. It uses a manual steering box and it connects to a pump and a hydraulic cylinder.https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=253657

Wow, that thread was really interesting. So am I thinking correctly that if I have a power steering box and not all the additional that is in that thread someone upgraded my 67??

Find a 71-72 Column (tilt if you desire that) and intermediate shaft. Best bet is finding an original column versus the aftermarket. I never jave bought a tilt beciase I never move the wheel from it's original position. Seems way easier ( to me) to find a non tilt automatic column and other folks seems to want tilt.

On my 68 C10 project I went with an Ididit tilt column. Worked well.

Is there a lot of mods to do to make that column work?
Thanks

Re: 67 SWB Steering question

I first tried a CPP tilt column, but didn't like it. I wound up getting a rebuilt GM tilt column from Les (70shortfleet). Les does good work and it was worth the money. Ah, memories of modifying my '67 frame rail with a few well-placed swings of a 20lb sledge to fit the p/s steering box...good times.

For my steering gear box I went with a reman Lares 1075 with the later 3-1/4 turn ratio, but it seems a little sloppy. Swapping out the OEM 17" steering wheel to a 15" comfort grip really helped at higher speeds on the interstate. In the future I plan to upgrade to a Borgeson 800132 gear and maybe their rag joint eliminator (033152).
