Old distributor refresh, timing questions

3 Attachment(s)
Was messing with my distributor today, I bought a moroso advance kit and gear shims. The old springs are pretty loose and the gear has about .080 of play. I shimmed the gear to about .015 of play and the distributor will still drop in and sit down on the intake without a gasket, so I think I'm good there for clearance.

I installed the included copper bushing, the old plastic one had fallen off. From what I'm figuring (and online calculatoring) .. I have about 17 degrees of mechanical advance, so 34 crank degrees?
Am i down to welding the slot closed a bit to limit the advance? From what I'm reading the vortecs like 8-10 degrees at idle and 30-32 total?

It is good that you checked it. 30 years ago I had shimmed the shaft on my six cylinder HEI and found that it would not sit in all the way and was pushing against the oil pump.

Hobby stores have copper tubing in incremental sizes that will slip inside each other. Easier to build up and work back if needed.

Thanks.
Good idea with the copper tubing, I probably have a couple sizes around here..

Do you have the distributor part number?
I have a motors manual with the timing specs.
Might be in there.

Here you go.
It’s listed in the 69/70 year.

Cool, thanks.
I guess I was pretty close, I figured 17 degrees of mechanical advance by making some marks and eagle eyeing it.. :)

I ended up welding a short piece of key stock to the distributor plate as a stop , it's set right around 10 degrees for now
