Hood alignment
 

Done some searching and can't find anything definitive to this problem, so reaching out on our 1972 GMC hood gap.

I think I have validated we have the right year fenders, cowl, and hood (OEM) upper grille, and hood (aftermarket), but I still have this gap. No excessive panel gaps from fender to doors. What advice or measurements do you have to assist with minimizing this gap?

You can move it back slightly by loosing the upper hinge bolts. As for the height, the rear rubber seal if hard wont allow the hood to sit flush. Only seal worth a hoot is an NOS GM seal, as they have the correct rubber density, and proper shape.

If I move it back, then I have a gap up front, which is the premise of the post. There is too much space. Anyone got a link to the OEM hood rubber?

Can't really tell, but the front edge of the hood, how does it line up with the front edge of the fender?

You may have to fudge the cowl forward slightly and the hood back slightly and kinda split the difference. I think the factory tolerance was 3/16" ±.030 so they didn't really fit perfectly from the factory. I had to fudge my hood back about 1/32 but it's not that noticeable.

If you can adjust the doors back, then you can move the entire front clip back, too, which will decrease that hood/cowl gap.

Looks a little high in the back as well. Loosen the three bolts on each side holding hinges to fenders. Push up on front edge of hood, use a prop rod or have someone hold it while tightening hinge bolts. Should lower back of hood and suck it a bit tighter to cowl.

A couple of years ago I installed new cab mounts on Otis and it basically threw everything out of whack so to speak, the radiator supports were new.
It still boggles my mind as to why someone would dismantle a truck to paint it then put the old worn, possibly original cab mounts back on.

I took it to a local guy who's been around for years and works wonders on these old vehicles, he did end up moving/adjusting the doors on both sides to get everything to fall into place.
