Is there a non-paper filter that goes onto the carb
I have a 402 with a 4 barrel carb and it has the fuel inlet line in the front side with a filter. Is there a non-paper filter for in there? I keep seeing them mentioned but I cannot find one on any parts lists or stores. Is there a small metal screen type, a lava stone type or how about an external in-line ne that threads into the carb . Or could I ditch the carb filter and just use a filter somewhere between the tank and carb

Re: Is there a non-paper filter that goes onto the carb
The bronze filters are what I've normally seen on the quadrajets. My personal preference, even though it's not factory original on the trucks and requires a little plumbing if you use the ones with tapped fittings (there are simpler clamp-only inlines options also), is the inline metal-cased filter. I avoid glass and plastic filters - glass definitely a fire hazard, and I guess I don't trust the plastic ones for the same reason, even if they won't shatter, they can melt with the same end result. All that said - I've not heard any complaints about the paper filters that go in the same cavity as the bronze filters - is there any reason you don't want to use a paper filter? (just curious)

Any parts store should be able to sell you a sintered bronze filter to fit a Q-jet carb (if that's what you have).

Re: Is there a non-paper filter that goes onto the carb
I've never had anything but the paper filter at the carb inlet. I had a disintegrated sock in the tank that clogged the filter, and such, but I've never had an issue with the filter being paper. It's always done the job. The problem was that it got overloaded from the crap in the tank. I presume other types of filters would have been overloaded as well.

The material in the non-bronze filters is not paper it is a fiber material and it will not deteriorate if changed at the recommended intervals. NAPA/Echlin part number for your filter is FIL 3051. (this is the premium one with the check valve in it) If your spring is missing it is available from NAPA under part number NOE 7321078 . |
Re: Is there a non-paper filter that goes onto the carb
Be careful removing the carb bronze filter, that large nut that houses it is frequently and easily cross-threaded and causes you all kinds of fun problems.
Honestly that would be the main reason I'd remove the filter altogether and simply use two typical inline filters like the Wix 33033. Any fussing with that large carb nut is difficult and who knows what condition the threads are in after all these years and previous owners. |
Re: Is there a non-paper filter that goes onto the carb
I mentioned in a different thread about my experience when a paper -- oops, fiber (thanks, Leon) filter got plugged. I have never had a problem with bronze filters so that's all I will use now. Just my two cents.... :)

Re: Is there a non-paper filter that goes onto the carb
What is the micron rating on the bronze filter vs the paper?

Re: Is there a non-paper filter that goes onto the carb
OK nobody else is saying it so I will. Both are micron-enough for the poor design. It's great there is a filter but that little spring allows bypass of the filter especially under the pulsating pressure from the fuel pump, so gunk gets by it. A metal filter like the one jumpsoffrock mentions, Wix 33033, is necessary in the short hose between cab and frame. I don't put a fuel filter on the pressure side of the fuel pump and have nothing but steel line between the fuel pump and carburetor inlet.
