Starter wiring cleanup
 

What is everyone doing with the wiring to the starter to clean it up, protect it?

I remember, back in the day, there was a metal conduit you installed. I hated those and usually removed them, but now I can appreciate the part.

I am using a remote solenoid, so all I have going to the starter is the 2ga batt cable and the jumper. Cable is sheathed

That conduit piece performed its function very well. The piece is out there, you just have to do a diligent search for it.

I've got the metal conduit and it keeps the wiring off/away from the headers.

When I was putting it all back together this and the mechanical, passenger side exhaust flapper were two bits I wasn't going to reuse...reconsidered the tube and it works well.

if not a factory restoration, I'd recommend converting to one wire starter by installing the ford style remote solenoid. this relocates lighter gage wiring out of harms way when running headers or other mods. also easier for wire management or clean-up. hundreds of how-to diagrams and pictures on the interwebs.

as for the tube, I searched "small (or big) block chevy starter wiring tube" and several different forms of them showed up. don't limit searches for truck parts only, many sedans had these from the factory. being an engine mounted part, one of those may suit your needs.

Wipe it down with go jo hand cleaner.
Put it in a zip lock bag with some ArmourAll.

You can get hi temperature protective sleeves, by the foot , from aircraft spruce and specialty co.

If certain wires need to be replace aircraft spruce also sells very high quality wire in various colors and guages. Those unique gm style wire ends are readily available both individually and in bulk.

This is what I did on my 68 with the 396 install. The heat shield mounted to the solenoid and the front starter brace bolt. You will see why something is needed when you see how close the exhaust manifold is to the starter and solenoid. The battery cable runs on top of the frame and then is bolted to the starter as in photo 4&5. The engine starter harness comes down the firewall and runs under the heat shield away from the exhaust. I added a rubber hose as insulator on the engine harness.

That heat shield was there when I replaced the starter on my truck, but I went with a mini starter and did not reinstall the heat shield. Since I got the engine's hot-running habits over with, I don't need that shield.
