short h2o pump vs. long pump
I'm gettign closer and closer to getting the new bored 60 350 running and i'm fighting the h2o pump issue.
I'm really leaning toward a long shaft one. But whats the advantage - if any. How can i find one at the parts store (what do i ask for) b/c i've asked for the long pump and i get that deer w/ headlights in eyes comming at 75 look. I'm putting electric fans on the rad. and i can't find a harmonic balancer w/ grooves at autozone or ebay. (if you can help for cheap let me know) Thanks, sswj |

I had several issues with my water pump. I have a '69 307 V8, and switched from a long pump (which fit fine) to a short pump, to accommodate Alt brackets. From what I was told was there is no performance difference between stock water pumps. There is a 1 3/8" length difference between the pumps. (based on the image below) What I learned is that the pump you choose will change what pulleys and Alt brackets you use, but that's all. If you want a long pump, tell the parts person you want a pump for a 74-75 small block chevy. The missing space of no fan should allow enough room for the electric fan. Hope this helps as far as the water pump. |
What brackets and pulleys you have now or are planning on running is what’s going to make the difference in witch pump you need to use.
To my knowledge there are no SBC balancers with groves cast in them, you will have a pulley or series of pulleys bolted to it. |

Since we are talking about pullys now, here is my question to add on:
My truck ('72) was originally a California truck, complete with Smog pump and all. The PO took off the smog pump when he redid the engine, but left the pullys. The crank pully has 3 grooves, and this is a non A.C. truck. I am going to get Vintage A.C. here very soon, so will this 3 groove pully work fine, or is a pully setup for smog different than one set up for A.C.? |
