It`s funny,it tells you exactly what the option is in this case.But,tire sizing has changed over the years so much that most don`t know what they`re looking at.L78s are the largest size available in that series.No factory radials back then,all Bias Belt.Back then,all vehicles except some muscle cars came with 78 series with 60 & 70 series being the aftermarket "fatties".Firestone made "Wide Ovals" that came on alot of muscle machines.Uniroyal "Tiger Paws" were another and I can`t even remember what Goodyear had.
The 16.5s came out in this era to provide a Wide Oval-type truck tire which is why you could get 16.5s on a 1/2t.Nowadays they have it so buggered-up,I don`t pay any attention to it.They can`t make 16.5s,but they can come out with umpteen other "new" diameters in umpteen profiles to make a mess for themselves and you need a course in tire sizing to even know what all your choices are.
