When I was looking at the 1406, summit had a hard line for it that ran most or all of the way between the pump and the carb. It was summit branded, so it was pretty inexpensive as far as those things go.
Back on topic, I would keep the vent hoses from the valve cover for the reasons mentioned. You could go with vents instead, but they might blow oil on the engine. That would not be an improvement.
