Well, that would be a game-changer if you're able to fab a cable. You should be able to find an old cable with that retainer in the junkyard. Just cut it up and you've got your part.

Conversely, '69 Nova rear cables run $25 each at The Right Stuff (Columbus, Ohio). If you told them the total length of the cable and sheave and the type of rear end I'm sure they could make a couple for you in about that price range. (Actually, you might be able to tell them the year of the truck and rear end type and they'd be able to figure it out.)
