We used to do it all the time back in the old days at the service station

Never had one come back that I recall.

I never even pulled them off; just cleaned everything up and honed them in place with a spring loaded hone chucked into an electric drill. Just make sure the cups are installed with the hollow side towards the brake fluid (inside).

You probably want to put in new rear axle seals while you have the hub apart to get at the brakes.
