Gauge failure is common and the sending unit failure is common.

There are 2 ways to diagnose the problem.

The easiest will be with a scan tool. Plug it in and monitor the fuel level pid. If the tank is full, it should register close to 100%.

You can also unplug the fuel sending unit and use a jumper wire to give the purple wire a path to ground. Watch the gauge as you do that.

You can also check the cluster with a scan tool. You can perform a sweep of all the gauges. It will test all the stepper motors in the cluster.
