Those pal nuts can be a son of a gun, I usually just grab them with channel locks and rip them off, make sure you have a source for a new one, haven't ever been able to save them
Once you get them off, you'll see 2 or 3 paws that grip the rod. that's the problem, haven't been able to release and reuse them
