My preference was to get a new assembly, or at least a new float and sock, but I was curious, and once I had it apart, I couldn't see the point of putting it back in the tank without at least trying to get it to work.
Have no idea how long it will last, but at least I know that if it goes again, it is a piece of cake to put in a new unit, and in the meantime, I have a working gauge.
