SM465 with M10x1.00 thread for shift knob?

Original shift knob was aluminum and half jammed on when I bought the vehicle.

Shaft measured 0.374 and thread looked very fine so I bought a 3/8-24 nut to test fit. Did not fit.

So I bought a couple of metric nuts: one was labeled M10x1.25 and the other was labeled M10x1.00. The fine threaded one fit perfectly.

Now I cant find any shifter knobs with an M10x1.00 thread.

I'm now wondering of the hardware store bin was mislabeled or if I do really need the M10x1.00 and they are just hard to find.

Any ideas? I have a proper thread gauge somewhere and may need to dig it out.

You can probably run a tap into the existing knob and clean up the threads.

I did that with my MY6 shift knob. The shaft was fine thread and the replacement knob (a transfer case knob) was coarse thread . Ran a tap in it with no problem.

Another option would be to drill the threads out and use the appropriate heli-coil insert.

Thanks, guys. Maybe just I'm fooling myself with the M10x1.00 nut. Its dimensions are so similar to the 3/8-24 that it's not even funny. And maybe with a little more chamfer clean up the 3/8-24 will fit.

A thread gauge is what you need...that 10mm is larger than 3/8...that may be why it threads on so well.....
get a 3/8-24 die and chase the threads and you should be good...

I was concerned that if someone had swapped in a newer SM465 it might have had some metric in it, but based on your info and guidance I'll run a 3/8-24 die down the threads. I would have hated to risk doing that if it were really a metric or vice versa.

I think I might already have one in my tool box. I bought a bunch when our local hardware store (OSH) went out of business.

I ran the 3/8-24 die down the shifter threads this weekend. I was careful to keep it perpendicular, which was kind of hard. It felt a little tight at first and then got easy the rest of the way down. Then I was able to spin a 3/8-24 nut up and down the threads with ease.

Then I ordered a proper round shifter ball. eBay even had one with the correct SM465 shift pattern. I hope the quality is ok, because sometimes eBay is sketchy.

All is well. Glad I could find one with the shift pattern because I plan to teach family members to drive a stick with this truck.

A little late to the party but glad it worked out.

I had the same problem some years back when I was adding a lawn mower piston as a shift knob on an old mud truck.

I fitted the 3/8 nut to the underside of the piston and then it did not work.

Like you, I ended up chasing the threads and then it worked like a dream.
