Unhappy Stubborn series 56 connector

Pretty basic stuff here, but HELP! Installing new M and H dash harness, all going smoothly but can't open the connector at the firewall between the existing (old) dash harness and the (old) engine harness. Presume it's a typical series 56 male/female (four wire) connector. Well lubricated..?need special tool to release? Would rather not pull the whole rubber grommet through the firewall. Any advice appreciated.
