HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?
I am trying to replace the rear wheel cylinders on my c-10. I purchased a pair at our local auto chain and they barely did not fit. I took them back and accroding to their computers they gave me the correct part numbers. Has anyone done this and had to modify the cylinder casting a little or did I have the wrong wheel cylinders. The numbers on the castings of the wheel cylinders that I took off are 6459 649

Re: HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?
what does barely dont fit mean? if its where they go into the backing plate they sometimes require dressing the casting with a file and the backing plate holes sometimes have rust build up from 40years they are upposed to b a tight fit in the hole

Re: HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?
That is exactlly right, But the casting in the new ones are just a little bit larger at about 10 o clock and 2 o clock from the threaded mounting holes. have they changed a little do to after market and time? Just file those or should the new ones look exactlly like what I took off or

Re: HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?
If the casting on the wheel cylinder is a little bigger than the backing plate....I would file the backing plate a little at a time until the wheel cylinder fit. Do the mounting bolts line up with the backing plate?

Re: HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?
Im not sure. I did not try to install the bolts I tried to install and noticed it was not going to slip into the backing plate so I just compared it to the old one and there was some differences so I box them up and took them back to the O'------. I am going to try to go to a Chevy Dealer ship and take the old one with me to see if they can cross the Casting #'s and see what they offer for a replacment $$.
Just wanted to pick some brains before I did this Thanks to those who looked and responded ![]() ![]() ![]()

Have the pistons extended out of the cylinders some and need squeezing back inside the bore ?

Re: HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?
IIRC there are regular and heavy duty brakes. It may be possible that there is a difference between the two.I have gotten a wheel cyl that did not have one of the bolt holes tapped.I had a heck of a time with it but learned to always check threaded holes before trying to install a part.

Re: HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?
I know the there is some with a 1 1/8" bore and the ones that I have with a
1" bore. It just seems to be the castings that did not want to fit in the backing plate hole do to extra material around the threaded holes, the fluid line hole and the mounting holes looked correct "with my eyes".

Re: HELP! 72 c10 Rear Wheel Cylinder?
file the back of the wheel cylinder until they fit, this is a common problem. It will not take much.
