Re: Head light switch
Push the button, push the knob shaft in and release the button.

Re: Head light switch
They do that sometimes, did you slide it in and out a few times, not pulling it completely out of the switch?
Dirt and dust build up and keep the latch from grabbing.

Re: Head light switch
I've used a small crochet hook to reach inside to pull the locking tab back up before. You can do the same thing with a large paper clip and a pair of needle nose pliers.
1. Straighten out paper clip by hand leaving the last bend at 90 degree's to use as a handle. 2. Using the pliers, bend a SHORT "J" hok at the end of the paper clip opposite the handle. 3. Reach down inside the switch to hook the lock and pull it back up to the "ON" position. note that you may need to depress the button while doing so. good luck and have fun!!!

Re: Head light switch
I ended up pulling the switch back out and taking it apart. Looks like the push button isnt hitting the sheetmetal that holds the plunger in, i plan on putting it back in the truck this afternoon and make sure it works.

Re: Head light switch
I've had problems with the headlight switch out of my 74 as well. I bought a new one to replace it. If it gives me problems then I plan on using a headlight switch out of a 59 Chevy truck. They're simpler and more reliable and they have tabs on them for the wiring so they should be very easy to adapt. They also attach to the dashboard the same way and should look perfectly stock without cutting or drilling anything and have the same functionality, except maybe a dimmer if the 74s had that as an option.
