Reduction gear starter

Hey guys, anyone know for absolutely sure where to get a gear reduction starter that will fit a BB 402, automatic 400, 168 tooth flywheel? I just bought one from NAPA that the paperwork said would fit,it didn't. So, now I'm stuck with a $270 starter that is useless to me. If someone knows where to get the right one, and maybe the part number, I would appreciate the information.

Another option is the gear reduction from a gm 8.1 big block. Get the starter bolts from a dealer. You need 1 of each bolt. Total cost is less then $7 bucks and fit the best.

Part Numbers

• Starter - GM (10465578)
• Starter Mount Bolt - GM (12561848)
• Starter Mount Bolt - GM (11610787)

Have them on 3 of my 4 vehicles two 454s and one 400 sb and it starts with 36° initial timing.

Looks like you now have it under control, but I bought mine at a local speed shop and luckily got it right the first time. A good counter person makes all the difference in the world. It doesn't seem to engage a lot of the flex plate (which is the original, at 217k miles). The flex plate will be replaced soon.

I took it back. I got a lady salesperson who knew very little, and I now own an expensive wheel chock. To the guy with all the tooth counts and mounting locations, thanks, but that doesn't make this starter fit my motor.

It needs to be a 168 tooth flywheel. But I have read that the manuals trans require a cast-iron nose starter. something about the nose fitment into the bell housing being different between the aluminium and cast iron nose size. I don't have any manual trans so I can"t say for sure. The later starter may work. All I can confirm is it works on 168T automatics. If you do try it let me know.

67-72 with manual trans used a bellhousing mount starter and not block mounted. It is possible to use a later style gear reduction starter. Chances are the GM style gear reduction unit would work, but on my Jimmy I used a non-supported nose Denso style starter which works great.

Whatever parts store sold you the wrong part and wouldn’t take it back sux.
