Carpet or mat hold down strips?
Hi all, I don't know what I have here and was hoping to see if it's ok to ask. I will be honest, these are going to be for sale, but without knowing what they are I can't give info. I did some searching in the for sale section to try to learn but didn't really get much info. They may not be in good enough condition to sell even.
All I do know is that they are way different than the ones in my '70 Jimmy that are carpet hold downs. The side tailgate weatherstrip hold downs are about an inch shorter than my '70, but I'm sure they haven't been cut. They were supposed to be from a '71 or '72 Jimmy that was already parted out when I got these. The long ones seem to fit my '70 but mine are good and as I said very different. If this is against the rules please delete. I didn't read anything in the rules that suggested that this is not allowed. Thanks---DAC

Re: Carpet or mat hold down strips?
The middle strip in the first picture is a rear carpet strip. The right strip is a tailgate strip for the hatch to rest on. The other two are for the weatherstrip on the tailgate and run vertical with the bed. There is a weatherstrip that tucks into them and the carpet strip that seals the tailgate. Not sure why your other ones would be different. I have a 72 and they look the same.

Re: Carpet or mat hold down strips?
I'm pretty sure the two strips on the left are just two front carpet strips with one flipped around.. The rear is prone to rust and I believe people may have swapped them. My 72 had the strip with the channel for weatherstripping and its original. I have the front strip just like the two you have in the picture and its in better shape. I've heard people say the front and rear are the same on some years but this has never been substantiated as I've seen the rear strip in 69-72. If you decide to sell the rear strip I might be a buyer.

This stuff is going to be put up for sale, (not the '70 carpet strips) but I still need to learn how to ship parts this long before I can begin to calculate shipping! Hopefully I can come up with a plan within a couple weeks. I go on-call at work tomorrow so internet time will be limited for a week. Thanks for all the commentary! DAC

Re: Carpet or mat hold down strips?
There are two different designs for the hatch weatherstip to tailgate top metal strip...

Re: Carpet or mat hold down strips?
Not sure which is correct for 71 but suspect the lower profile example - it's funny all the little differences GM imparted from year to year like use of the lower tailgate trim on 72 MY CST/lower molding equipped K5s.

Re: Carpet or mat hold down strips?
I just studied Tristan's thread better and it appears '71 and '72 used the same tailgate seal strips as well as the hatch rest. Sure wish I would have kept up on his thread better since I just rebuilt my transfer case and painted it Chevy orange instead of the GMC Fireball red-------
Probably try to figure out how to mask and repaint! DAC

Re: Carpet or mat hold down strips?
Just get the gray pvc electric conduit at lowes tape each in really good and ship I have done it plenty of times. Most of the time the USPS is reasonable on the long skinny stuff if not use one of the other shipping companies.

Re: Carpet or mat hold down strips?
I've seen pvc pipe used as well. Yea I don't know on the strips but maybe 72 is different to keep the elements out. Seems weird they would not have thought that up in older models but there are quite a few 72 only parts on that year.
