Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

I'm not sure if this belongs here or not but they sure are heavy they weren't made by the general but they needed a reliable heart with a great service network let's talk about the heavy trucks, tractors, cranes, ect. with GM hearts the first one was John Deere's second attempt at a 4 wheel drive tractor the recalled 8010's (the tractor in the 2nd pic) were upgraded with better seals between the 6 cylinder Detroit and the 8 speed road ranger I believe? and a better oil pump and something to do with better cooling it could pull an 8 bottom plow a 7 mph and back then they cost brand new in 1960 $30-35,000 dollars the third and fourth pic is the one year only made equipped with a 2-53 2 cylinder GM Diesel engine

Pretty accurate. Actually they were offered in the '59 and '60 model years, although about the last 10 months of '59 and the first part of '60. I believe they were made only for 13 months total.

I never knew they made one until I was over at a guy's house one day who has a bunch of old trucks and equipment, back around '92. He was showing me his collection and mentioned something about a Detroit and the John Deere. I saw the Tractor and was looking around for the Detroit. I walked back over to him and said, "I saw the John Deere, but didn't see any Detroit near it". He then said "No, the Detroit is "in" the John Deere". Well being an old Detroit fan and a recent John Deere fan, I couldn't believe it.

Asked him about selling it, as I was looking to soon replace my little '46 Ford 2N, but we never got together on it.

In '99 I made up my mind to replace it for sure and found one nearby for a reasonable price. Mine is a '59. (They are all Model 435's).

I believe the Oliver has a 3-71.

I've seen them at the Tractor Pull and they sure do sound sweet, especially with a Straight Stack like the one above.

Re: Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

The Super 99, updated 990 and 995[with Allison torque converter] all used the 3-71 , plus Oliver made the Massey 98. The 6V71 fits in those chassis as well.

The 2-53 in the Deere 435 is derated to try to preserve the final drive, small injectors, no oil cooler, special water pump.

Lots of GM-powered equipment out there, especially diesel. It seems Detroit was a favorite for fire trucks and mobile cranes. Then, there were GM's own heavy equipment companies. Next we'll have to do a thread on GM-powered boats

Re: Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

They say Detroit Diesels helped win the War!!

Seeing that they were first out in '38, they were all ready well established by the time they were needed for war in late '41.

A list of uses all through the years:

-Trucks
-Buses
-Tanks
-Ships
-Boats
-Generators
-Pumps
-Tractors
-Dozers
-Loaders
-Backhoes
-Cranes
-Forklifts

(keep adding to the list)

Re: Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

How about heavy machinery powered AND built by GM? The Euclid TC12 was the baddest crawler tractor on the planet starting in '55 (55-68-Euclid/68-74-Terex). Twin 6-71s and two Allison 3spd Torqmatics mounted in a split frame that allowed each side to oscillate over uneven ground. Suspension...what? The controls required were but simple. Two levers and two pedals. One pedal each side for brakes and one lever each side controlled steering and throttle for each engine. Steering was done by the amount of throttle to each side. So it could spin on a dime with one throttle forward and one throttle back. I've herd guys talk about these for years and there's a lot of love out there for these, yet. I spotted one along the hiway on our way up to Macungie this year. Hmmmm.... How bad do I need that?

Here are some pics of the John Deere 440 industrial 2 cylinder crawler and wheel tractor the were offered with your choice of 3 different engines either the extremely rare all fuel model, gasoline model, or the 2-53 GM Diesel engine. various equipment options could be had such as dozer blades, loaders, pipe laying cranes ,cable layers they also could be had with a direction reverser and pilot touch control was available on the crawler models it eliminated the dual control levers for a single control lever but it did not do very well and constantly needed adjusted and was recalled and the dual control levers were installed

My Dad operated one of these. He said it took 3 low boy semi trailers to move a TC12. One for each half and one for the blade.

Euclid...GM 1953-1968 till the Fed made them change things up,which is when Terex got started. I grew up with Euclids and was fascinated by them.

All very impressive, but I think I have you beat:

http://www.oerm.org/collection/santa-fe/atsf-98

Don't forget, GM founded EMD, one of the largest manufacturers of diesel-electric railroad locomotives. This particular locomotive is an FP45 from 1967. It has a turbocharged 20 cylinder EMD 654 diesel of 3,600 h.p.. These engines are similar to Detroits in that they are 2 stroke, and the '654' designation stands for the cubic inch displacement of one cylinder! I volunteer at that museum, and have had the pleasure of not only working on that particular locomotive (it is currently being restored) but operating it as well.

Hello Bob!

Thanks for sharing this. As a new resident to So Cal, I will be coming up and taking a look at the Museum's operations.

Yes, and it's as much a GM product as my '67 GMC. I can't wait until we finish it.

Glad you enjoyed it, Bob.

What i always found ironic was the fact that ford used detroits alot in there big trucks, seen tons for sale, but i guess the saying is true, fords run better with gm parts.

Many a new Ford car was delivered to the dealership on the back of a Louisville Ford powered by GM's Detroit Diesel. That's why GM is great. They make/made more of their own stuff...and stuff for other makes...than the others. Ford and Chrysler made less of their own truck than GM. Look back to the early days of diesel heavy trucks and you hear about those GMCs right along with Mack,White,Peterbilt,or any other. You don't hear raves about how great the Fords and Dodges were. To this day, with the companies only making light trucks, Ford uses International and Dodge uses Cummins and GM makes their own. Then, there were the Allison Transmissions (and aircraft engines). But, GM sold that in '07

Its too bad gm didnt get more into the ag market, if they made tractors, they would have been some of the best.

Yeah, Ford got their share of Detroits, but you could actually get one in just about any truck, American Made anyway. I've seen some interesting combinations, although not real sure they were all factory, but a Detroit in a B-Model Mack is pretty interesting and I've also seen a 6-71 in an R-Model Mack. They put plenty of 8V-71's in them, but a 6-71 is pretty rare in an R.

Re: Heavy Machines powered by GM diesels or Detroits

One thing ive noticed with the older trucks is they may have offered various brand (cat, cummins, detroit) but it always seemed one manufacturer preffered one brand, like the older IH trucks, they offered those 3, but it seems like the cummins was the most popular for them and older kenworths, and cat was the most popular in peterbilts.

Wow, I have never seen a 6-71 in a Mack R. Not saying they didn't build any, I just have yet to see one. Roadway had a lot of Mack R's with 8V-71's in them, that was one of their standard line-haul tractors for many years. Even had some later version R's with 6V-92TA's.
