Re: anyone got a STRAIGHT AXLE GASSER STYLE TRUCK

Probably wont find many 67's that way.The gasser look had kind of faded by the time hot rodders could afford to cut up one of these.I like the look also and see there seems to be a comeback of that style.Check out Hot Rod Deluxe (latest issue) for some cool gasser pics and tech.

I could see it now. a swb jacked to the hilt on a straight axle up front, no hood, 9" F@rd narrowed rear end, tunnel ram with twin Carter 600's, nostalgic rear slicks, 12" wide rear and 4" front Halibrands, a bit of red or yellow window tint, NICE!

THANKS C10 ADDICT.... I NEVER would have found this thread bing I spent most of my on this board on the DRAG RACING page.

Yes we are planning to build a "gasser" C10 short wheel base stepside. Although the "gasser classes" stayed until the early 70's making a '67 C10 a legit gasser canidate for being used "back then" I have never seen or heard of one so I doubt there ever was one....

With the styling of the 67-72 C10's I think everyone would admit that a C10 could do quite easily (and nicely) with the right mods.

We are currently actively in the "parts collecting" stage of the build having only removing (and selling) the engine & tranny and dismantling the front clip. Hope to start doing some serious work on it in the next month or so.

Having just been to the "GASSER REUNION" at Thompson Raceway (OHIO) I am fueled with all kinds of motivation for the project.

So far we have collected a '67 one piece fiberglass tilt frontend - headers from a stock car that we modified into fenderwell exit headers - a 9" F**d rearend - 400 turbo trans setup for street/strip - a 350CI with 4 bolt mains which will be built and stroked (383) ..... going to use LARGER tires than the "early gassers" because we do plan to race this thing .... and LAST but NOT LEAST.... after months of "should I" or "shouldn't I" we are going to install a vintage look "straight front axle".

Other plans include ..... radical CHOPPED roof (5" or more) which we will do by chopping a little by little until we get the look we are looking for - moon tank - aluminum floor - '59 Caddy taillights frenched into the rear fenders.....

Here's a few pictures of a mock-up we did to get an idea of the stance we are looking for.....

I love the Gasser look - but I'm ignorant when it comes to the definition of a Gasser. What's it all about? Any websites or forums where I can go to learn more?

My wife is vehemently against me going to look at this:

Check this out ...... fuel for the fire .... not that any of us need any prompting.....

I should talk.... if a $900 Chevy gasser project like this one was available in my area I'd be on it..... but getting it from Washington state to Pennsylvania would be a hassle/expense..... maybe someone's (our C10) trying to tell me something..... Ha!!!!

I haven't seen any 67-72 truck gassers but I always liked this Willys. It was owned by the Grove brothers out of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Picture was taken in the early 60's at the Des Moines Dragway.

Ya gotta love the trailer!!

Re: anyone got a STRAIGHT AXLE GASSER STYLE TRUCK

Not that I'm smart or anything but the easyiest way to build a truck gasser would be to start with a 4x4 and remove the front axle and replace it with a 59-66 ford axle since that's like the only truck wide enough with a straight axle that would be wide enough to look right on a 67-72 chevy. The pad mounts are almost the same u would have to elongate the front holes on the axle pad to flip the axle to get that nose up look or use 4x4 lift springs. Simple crossover steering setup remove transfercase and inner fender wells and bam add some headers a 14 bolt from a 1 ton some wide rear and skinny fronts and u got a gasser. U can get a nice disk brake setup for the 59-66 ford axle from speedway and let's see what else... O ya I gotta 86 c-10 I wanna do this too but I'm worried the old time purists would call me a poser lol. I've built some quality gassers including a 64 ford pickup and they are very akward and hard to drive on the street. So u need another truck and a trailer before u decide to build one!!!! Lol. I forgot to add to the list a 632bbc with alky injection a 1471blower and a 4 speed. O ya and ladder bars don't for get the ladder bars.

Would this be the type of straight axle being discussed?

pmpski, the gasser style is a drag style from the 60's.It is almost always a straight axle front suspension, leaf rear, vehicle with fenderwell headers.Search for Gassers or maybe "Stone,Woods, and Cook" dragsters.Almost any nostalgia drag racing site will have pics of a few.

Re: anyone got a STRAIGHT AXLE GASSER STYLE TRUCK

I love gassers! They didnt actually have to have a straight axle to be a gasser car, but they usually were. My truck has a few gasser era extras but no where near a gasser truck. More of a gasser-hauler or push truck maybe. I have tossed the idea around a few times about installing a push bumper on it...
