Power Steering Question??????????
I have/had a problem with the power steering bracket on my '72 3/4 T, with a factory 402 BB.
The bracket for the power steering pump is "bent" so the belt is "out of alignment." I can stand at the left fender and look across the belts & pulleys & see that things aren't lined up. (This is the factory set up) So as a result, it flings belts like there is no tomorrow. I finally got tired of replacing belts & just put a "necker/suicide" knob on the steering wheel. A friend of mine gave me the P/S pump & bracket assembly from a 454 he's putting in his Studebaker PU. Here's the question/problem: I have 1 friend that says everything will work; 1 that says it might work; and 1 that says it won't work. Please bear in mind, none of these folks are "youngsters" and have been involved with trucks & cars forever. (the youngest is in his mid-50's; the eldest, mid-70's) Any input would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. Thanx, El Jay P.S. Somebody else told me to just run the P/S belt "loose" so it doesn't get tossed off.

Re: Power Steering Question??????????
All 454's came from the factory with a "long" water pump set up (alternator on the passenger side) and your 402 came equipped with a "short" water pump setup.. (alternator on the drivers side)..
You can change everything on the front of the engine (Water pump, all pulleys and brackets) then extend the alternator wiring and make it work.. But just using the 454 PS pump and bracket will not work.. |

Thanks a ton. I don't really need to be replacing the "whole front of the engine!" El Jay
