NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
EDIT: GATE IS NOW FOR SALE http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...36#post3129936
It is definitely a GM gate from several things I was told to look at. Clean edges, welds, correct weight, etc. It's not NOS because it's not in the box, has been primered, and has the holes drilled for upper and lower moldings. But it's BY FAR the nicest gate I've ever laid eyes on. I picked up a gate in perfect shape this evening. I was told it was from a truck in California. When he bought the truck in 92 it was separate from the truck. So it's 17 years old and has been in storage. The truck was sold several years ago. Were repops made back then? Were/are any repops made with the drilling for the trim? I guess that would tell me if it's Repop or NOS. Either way it's in perfect shape without a single dent or scratch. He added the grey primer but no body work was done. If it's a repop I will use it and do the handle relocator to it. If it's NOS, I don't want to mess up a NOS gate so I will sell it.

I can check my new take off tomorrow to see if the spot welds and stuff look the same. Judging from the pics I would say it's probably NOS but it's really hard to tell without seeing it in person. LockDoc

Re: NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
Can you weigh it? It would be fun to find someone with a known NOS gate, and someone with a known repop, and have them both weigh them.

Re: NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
I have a Repop in the box....That's a good idea. When I get home and get some batteries for my scale I will weigh them both.

Re: NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
When I was at the carlisle swap meet I picked up several repop gates from several different vendors, most of which were probably the same manufacturer. I could tell as soon as I picked them up they were nothing like a stock gate. They feel noticeably lighter. Looking at your pics it appears to be either a NOS gate or a great OEM gate.
If it is "NOS" screw selling it. You'll have a hard time finding one that nice again for a decent price (maybe you'll luck out) but I say screw it and use it

Re: NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
That sure looks like a GM gate. The best way to know for sure is to weigh it. All of the repops are lightweight, and dent/bend VERY easily.

Re: NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
It looks atleast like a great OEM gate or possibly NOS I noticed the front edges look a lot cleaner than the repop gate I have which I had to do a lot of body work on to get it to look right.

I really like the gates with the letters on them and handle moved. I didn't mean to steal your idea, but it's good. I like the weight of the stock gate as well.

Re: NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
I've had 7 NOS gates and none of them had trim holes, it would be hard to sell as NOS being in primer and the trim holes.

I wouldn't sell it as NOS no matter what because it's been primed and isn't in a box and I have no way to be 100% sure...but after watching original gates that are painted selling for 750-850 on ebay...I don't see modifying a gate worth that much with a flip kit.

Do you have a pic of the very top edge. The older repros (like the age your talking about) were more square rather that rounded off.

Re: NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
When I did my K10 (about 12 yrs ago) the only repro tailgates available were garbage! They cost $100 and had no letters stamped in them. Mine had two dips in it from where my hands were the first time I closed it. I replaced it when the Goodmarks came out. Considering the age of the gate and the fact that it has letters and trim holes, I'm going to call it a nice original. Probably worth anywhere from $250-$800 depending on where you are and who wants it. I've seen the ones on ebay bringing big money, most of which have all the chrome and the handle and shiny paint. I don't know why some people pay more for them...but they do. I have seen NOS gates bring over $1100 before the nice reproductions came out. I've got a NOS gate that I paid $400 for. It came from this board and had been advertised for a couple of months before it sold. I felt like I got a steal at that price.
Either way...nice gate. |

I looked at my new take off gate and all the pieces, spot welds, etc. look the same. I would have to agree with 67ChevyRedneck about it being a NOS/new take off gate... LockDoc

Re: NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
Based on the location of the holes, the gate was intended for upper and lower trim (like Custom Deluxe, meaning no wood-grain cover). I suspect someone started with an NOS gate and drilled the holes for the upper and lower trim then never mounted it. JoesJunk is the "take-off" gate expert if you need more info.

Re: NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
Thanks for all the info and suggestions. That's why I appreciate this board so much!!!
I will take better pictures when I get a chance and will weigh both my Repop (With Chevrolet stamped) and this gate to get a better idea. Thanks Tri-pro for the weight on the repop...I expect mine to be the same as that but it will be interesting to see.

Re: NOS or Repop Tailgate? Can you tell???
No repro tailgates were made in`91.No tailgate ever came with the trim holes. It`s a new take off.If it never had color then it was an oem replacement (what became n.o.s.) that was drilled for trim. It`s worth a few hundred dollars,at least.
