C10 4x4.... why's it not a K10?
Well I just got home yesterday from picking up my new truck, a '69 C10 4x4 that I have know of and coveted for the past 20+ years. The owner during that time finally sold it to ME and I drove it home (525 miles) without a hitch!
My first question is: I thought all 4x4s were K-series (the Vin even starts out: KS), so why is the fender badge a C10? Secondly, it apparently (learned this over the weekend when I picked the former owner's brain) was a 6 cyl (250 or 292, he couldn't remember) from the factory. He swapped in a moderatly built 350 but kept the stock 3sp and axles as they were. On the highway top end was about 55-60mph ()w/ 31 inch tires), I originally thought 3:73 gearing, but he seemed to think 4:11...... what are any of your thoughts (of course I will crawl around and figure it out eventually, but I am sitting at my desk at work and want to know!) Finally (for now), is there a VIN code decoder I can find (the SPID decal is missing from my glovebox and I couldn't find a build sheet under the seat) that would help me know more about the vehicle? I called GM today for a restoration kit, but they were always on voicemail (must have cut that position during the Government takeover). Thanks! Mac |

Re: C10 4x4.... why's it not a K10?
maybe he swithed the fenders at some time, and all 4x4s are k series execpt the newer ones they have c1500 offroad z71 and other things, it could of had 4.10s or 3.73, maybe even 3.08s, the only way to know is put the cover.
And the vin decoder just go to google type in chevy vin decoder and then find the one thats says this website as the host.or press the link.http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html

Congrats on finally getting your 'new' truck! Looks very, very nice!
Dunno when they started putting 'K' badges on 4x4s, but it was after 1972, so yours are correct. It's a 'K' series truck, just has 'C' fender badges.

The only K emblem was on Blazers/Jimmys.

That is ONE sweet 69 K10! Did you figure out the gear ratio yet?

Re: C10 4x4.... why's it not a K10?
Yep, I finally pulled the diff cover and checked the ring gear markings: 4-17-68 date and 4:10 gearing..... sweet! While I had it off I installed my new polished, finned aluminum diff cover (I have always wanted one of these and this is the perfect truck to put one on).
Over the past three weeks I also located a set of 15x8 Rallye wheels, sanded and painted them, swung by Summit Racing just south of town and picked up a set of new polished aluminum beauty rings (15x8) and installed my new tires (32x11.5 BFG MTs). I also bought a used, but never installed 2inch Tuff Country set of front springs and shocks (all brand new) off Craigslist. Once I got the wheels and tires on, I realized the truck sat nice without it, so I am going to hold off on installing it for now. Here are some new photos of my progress. What do you think? Re: C10 4x4.... why's it not a K10?
That`s a nice truck.Not too many built,either.The C/10 was a base truck model,like a Custom/10 was middle and CST/10 was top model,whether C or K series.`70 was the last year of the C/10 with names taking over all model designates.the Blazer was the only one with a badge with a K.If you had a 2wd Blazer it would be a K/5,the opposite of your situation.In`71 a C/10 became a Custom/10,a Custom/10 became a Custom Deluxe/10 ,and a CST/10 became a Cheyenne/10.

Re: C10 4x4.... why's it not a K10?
I've found that many trucks that came with a straight 6 from the factory had 4.56 gears, which could definitely limit your highway speed with no overdrive and smaller tires
