Found a 1968 SWB.... - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have been looking to buy a 67-72 SWB and came across a 1968 SWB fleetside GMC with 327 auto on the floor(B&M shifter) for sale. He wants 7K for it but may be negotiable.
It has a wood bed that is weathered and starting to rot, fuel tank relocated,the frame has been c-notched with reverse spring kit in back and lowering springs up front. It has 20 inch five spoke Boss wheels with front discs with rear drums. It has some rust coming in on the passenger side rocker area,the truck runs but the engine is tired and it will need a paint job. Does the price sound good?

How can I tell if this is an original 68 GMC SWB fleetside?
How can I tell if the engine is original? (really doesnt matter too much to me)

Is there anything I should be looking at in particular before buying this year,make and model of truck?

Numbers numbers numbers

For a start, give us the VIN (Should be lcoated in glovebox/frame/driver door jam). All 3 numbers/lcoations should match.

Numbers behind driver side head (if v8 i assume) post those too

Welcome to the board!

If the VIN in the door jamb & SPID label in the glove box match, the SPID will tell you what the truck had from the factory. Whether it still has those parts will take more digging. Here's an example of my Chevy Burb. Chevy & GMC VINs are very different though. W/BASE should be 115.0 for a SWB.

IF it's really a V8 the VIN should read something like, CE10D-?B#####
C = 2wd, K = 4wd
E = V8, S = I6, M = V6
1 = 1/2 ton
0D = 67-69 Fleetside, 0C = 67-69 Stepside
- = special for PA, MA, NY otherwise left as dash
? is assembly plant letter code
B is year code (C=67, B=68, A=69, Z=70, 1=71)
# is 5 digit serial number off the line

The 327 & Auto should show up on the SPID as a line item since they weren't standard equipment. Looks like 327 was an available option too. That should give you some stuff to look at. BTW, page 10 of LMCTruck.com web site will help you decode the VIN & a few other numbers.

Look on the back side of the rockers underneath for rust. Also look at the cab supports going to frame in same area. Inside kick panel where floor meets firewall just in front of the doors. All places rust might be hiding. Good thing is there are patch panels for "almost" anything you might need if you find something later too.

Some rust seen maybe more, rotted wood, tired engine, and needs paint. With out looking at it, It sound too high to me. I would keep looking.

Sounds a bit high to me too. 7K will buy you a whole lot of truck right now in this economy.

The best advice when looking to buy one of these old truck is to leave the emotional aspect out of it. i have seen that cause way too many people pay way too much for one. If it doesn't seem right, walk away. there are plenty of them out there, esp in the price range you are looking. good luck

That right there is the best advice i've heard yet on buying one of these, wish i had left my emotions out, i wouldnt' have gotten boned to the hill on my truck

Hey guys the truck is missing the SPID on the glove box.

SHould I be looking for VIN serial numbers on drivers side door jamb and driver side cylinder head?

Where on the frame would VIN numbers be located?

The SPID is the key for documenting factory options. As been said $7000 sounds high. In this economy $7000 can buy a lot of truck. Pics would be of help.

Not even close at $7K. There are a lot more sellers than buyers right now... I'd really low ball him with a wad of cash. $$$ in hand is very tempting when you have bills to pay!
