Manual rack (MS II type), who is using these?

Folks,
I now have a power rack, but don't have the truck on the road yet and was considering going to a manual one....anyone using a manual one (who thinks that is the way to go)?

I don't have mine on the road yet either but I put in a power rack so I can use a smaller steering wheel.

if you run skinny tires up front i think the manual would be fine

I was just thinking that the manual, because it is designed to be that way - and is is a rack and pinion system, would be kinda cool.

Just don't want it to be too free...but I have the power rack so I may keep it.

Check that power rack that came with the front end, and tell me how many turns you have from lock to lock.
There is plenty of room for a pump, and you can get high pressure hose and fittings at Don.s,, take the rack and Jay will set you up for the fittings and route the hoses in a clean manner, go for it you will like to drive your truck

Jay works at Don's Hot Rod shop in Tucson on Stone Ave.
They have the fittings that will fit the rack and PS pump, If you do not have anything for your plumbing.
When you are placing the high pressure line on the rack be sure to ID the high pressure inlet on the rack, you do NOT want to get them backwards

I have a manual rack i got with my mustang II kit. I will be putting it in within the next couple months and will let you know how it goes. I bought it for a clean simple install so no hoses clutter the engine comp and it was cheaper lol.

I'll be running 15's up front with a 225 or 235

ok, see, that is what I was thinking.....it would look clean in there with use an alternator...I would think that the racks that are built to have no power, would be easier to use and have a good road feel. But I do not want to half to wrestle it.

I've heard manual racks aren't that hard to turn when made for manual steering and feel good, but nothing beats power steering in parking lots lol!!

I'm the same way just looking for clan clutter free install

by the way, I see you are in Tucson. - have you used Wild West Customs for anything? I have and they are a good bunch of guys - in case you need some good TIG welding or something.

I have never used them at all. I do alot of my work myself and my brother helps me at times cause he has a small shop. I've seen there shop, greats products and work. They said they could help me install my front end and gave me a great price i may take them up on

I would keep your power rack in your truck you will be much happier with it.When you make those right and left turns you will be glad you kept it in your truck.

i had a manual rack in my 63 ford truck. it turned real easy. i wouldnt be afraid of them

Just put a 283 and MII with manual rack in my '48 in Dec. Don't mind it at all. But I also have the original steering wheel. I can see where power would be good with a smaller wheel

I still wanna build a truck with power steering as well cause there are those times it makes all the diff in the world

I have power steering on my 54 with a big block. My steering is very sensative. I have been told to switch to a 79-93 mustang R&P because it is less sensative. Other than that I love the power steering. If you use a 79-93 rack be advised it is 15 1/2" center to center. If you have an older crossmember you will need to use off set bushings. The new racks have a slot in them so they can use either the 74-78 or the 79-93. NAPA part # is 22-203-F for the newer rack. This is the one that has 2 3/4 turns lock to lock. Hope this helps.

The rack you want to use is a 88 t-bird power rack

To Scotts Hot Rods, why is that the one to use over the 79-93 Mustang. Is it 16" center to center? I have a Fatman crossmember and I used V8 springs with one coil cut out. Now after 500 miles the bottom A frames are 2" above the rack. What springs should I use and should I get some 2" drop spindles also? I am not far from your shop and have talked to you before about other things. Perhaps you can give me some suggestions. Thanks
