Pic of factory camper wiring?
Does anyone know what the original (UY1 I think) camper wiring option consisted of?
I've read here that it just came with the truck, wasn't installed. Is it just the four-blade yellow/green/brown/white cable, or did it include the big 12g power cable too? My truck trailer wiring was blown through the frame with a torch, very crude and ugly, so I retained none of it. I kind of need to start fresh, and want to do a full 7-pin, but keep it somewhat period-correct looking if I can.

Re: Pic of factory camper wiring?
Here's what I had hanging off the firewall in my 70 GMC with the UY1. It ran down the inside of the frame to the back bumper. Here is a grainy wire code I found from this site.

Re: Pic of factory camper wiring?
I have that cable, and I don't have the truck at home so - why does it run under the hood? The signals and all of that would be picked up under the dash, so why do the green/yellow/brown etc come through the firewall and then into the engine bay?

Re: Pic of factory camper wiring?
The factory harness included yellow, brown and green wires for the camper tail and brake lights, a wire for backup lights, a white 12 or 10 gauge ground and a red 12 gauge hot wire. The 12 gauge red ran from the junction block on the right fender, was clipped to the top of the core support, and strapped to the front light harness back to the front of the cab. From there the harness(wrapped with wiring harness "tape") ran parallel with the standard rear harness inside the frame, through a hole (mine is also ragged) to the outside of the frame, and to the rear of the cab where it was secured by a clamp (clamp correct, bolt not correct in the pic below) to the lower back of the cab. According to the assembly manual it was then bundled and placed in the front stake pocket. I don't recall where my bundled harness was secured. The original clamp was secured with a hex head sheet metal screw. No connector was provided. That was left to the owner to select the appropriate version just as it is with the camper harness option on today's trucks.
Here's a bunch of pictures. Jim Last edited by FirstOwner69; 11-23-2015 at 09:32 PM. |

Re: Pic of factory camper wiring?
Thanks for the photos! I believe mine lived/will live exclusively on the driver's side since I have dual batteries.

Re: Pic of factory camper wiring?
Just FWIW, I'd want a grommet on the red truck's through-frame hole if it were up to me. Must have been official GM procedure to burn the hole with a torch (mine was WAY uglier though).
