Automatic Transmission Question
Hello all, today I was thinking... Does removing an automatic transmission cover make the trans run cooler? What are your thoughts???

Re: Automatic Transmission Question
I don’t think so but maybe someone with a trans temp gauge will chime in.

Re: Automatic Transmission Question
Probably not, but it does make your flexplate more prone to rock chips.
Knew a guy who used to run around with his hood unlatched to that half safety notch. Said it made the engine run cooler. That's what the radiator is for. Last edited by BRL; 06-19-2018 at 02:09 AM. |

Re: Automatic Transmission Question
op referring to the torque converter dust cover? doubt that would do much for cooling..
adding a higher capacity trans cooler up front would make the biggest difference.. smaller gains could be made with deeper pan, aluminum finned pan, or tube cooled pan like derale.. good luck!

Re: Automatic Transmission Question
This guy below me has a grate idea.I have a friend that is a plumber and a AC guy he drives around in a 1989 Chevy 3500 Big box van.He was having so many problems with his trans braking down.He found a old small window AC unit and Pulled out the Alum and copper coil that the Freon use to go throw this one was a rather Fat 3 core 10X12 he soldered 2 hose ends on put a electric fan on it and His trans never gave him a problem again

Re: Automatic Transmission Question
I'v been driving rigs without the transmission "dust cover" bolted on for about 30 years or more. No extra cooling, no rock chips, no nothing.
An efficient transmission cooler is the ticket. Even a deeper pan that holds a bit more fluid will help. Gary
