Re: Diff. How Much!

I believe if you get them from the major auto parts centers they have it in their books.

I went to Auto Zone and picked up synthetic oil for my 10 bolt dana on my 68 GMC. Their books showed I think 2 and 1/4 or 2 and 1/2 quarts. I got three and used a little more than 2 quarts.

I accept your rap on the knuckles! But since you have a GM Manual do you think you could help me and give me the spec. as this would be appreciated. MY manuals on my truck do not show this.

Re: Diff. How Much!

I've always been told you fill it up to the plug, or at least close enough to it where you can touch the fluid. Of course my mother also used to tell me that thunder was when clouds bumped together . There's no telling how much other misinformation I have inadvertently passed on to others!

Thank you for your comment. I'll just tell the parts guy I want to fill it to the plug so give me what ever that takes. I phoned the guy to buy gear oil and he had no idea how much the diff. required.

So that is why I posted this as I hate buying a bunch of stuff and taking half of it back.

Re: Diff. How Much!

Well a light note to end this post on ..... I was in at the GM Service counter today and decided to ask how much oil is needed to fill a 12 bolt. He was about 35 years old and very polite and said I have no idea but if you give me a minute I'll ask the tech's out in the shop ..... he comes back and say's one of the tech's say's 13 quarts and the other one say's 5 quarts!!!!!!! Yikes I said a 70' 1/2 ton not a tank.

They get over 80.00 dollars an hour .... scary.
