What did you screw up today?

The thread regarding "what you got done today" was quite popular. I know we all screw up stuff from time to time. As such, I was wondering what you screwed up and had to fix. In my infinite wisdom, I put the flywheel on backwards and didn't realize it until I had the motor/tranny installed and tried to spin the torque converter to get it bolted to the flywheel. Needless to say, I wasn't a happy camper. Shortly after that I installed my thermostat housing, only to realize I forgot to install the thermostat. So what did you screw up?

I figured out you can't put an oil pump drive shaft with the pinned on metal collar through the top...... Looks like I get to pull the boat engine... Again.
I'm in the process of moving so all of my toys and tools are in a storage building, just to make things more interesting.

Re: What did you screw up today?

Well I didnt do it today, but recently I tried to install my new ECE trans crossmember, after cutting old the perfectly functioning one, to find out the trans didnt line up with the crossmember and my exhaust wouldnt go back in! (After pulling the entire exhaust from the headers back)

Now I have to have the new crossmember welded on and the exhaust redone... all because I "wanted" the new crossmember.

Re: What did you screw up today?

Tried to see if I could put seals in a power steering gearbox I had. When I removed the input shaft worm gear, all the bearings fell out and haven't figured out how to re-install. Basically, it's a mess.

Re: What did you screw up today?

I did it a while ago, but I cut 2 full coils off of my front springs. I currently have about 1" of travel before the sway bar bushings act as my new bump stops. Someday I'll have money to have drop spindles.

Re: What did you screw up today?

GMSeeeeee,
I think you will find it a cinch to reassemble that pump if you clean the race and brgs with solvent or brake cleaner and then gob some litheum lube into the race...the bearings will then stick nicely in place......and might even stay there 'till you get it reassembled.....
Maybe.

Good luck.

Good idea. It's a spare one that I had and trying to learn how these d@mn things work. They look simple enough except for those little bearings. I'll try the grease. Thanx.

Re: What did you screw up today?

Well,
The latest screw up or mine involved me thinking that I had to change the stock rear end cover bolts out with stainless steel ones. I had just gotten the whole rear end rebuilt,( posi, gears, all brakes and all hardware, not to mention all of the powder coating) of the entire thing. Well as I was tightening down the third stainless steel bolt the head snapped off. I center punched the broken SS bolt went to drill it out and attempt to use an easy-out on it. The bit would just follow one side of the broken hope no matter how much I tried to keep it centered. In the end I had a friend help me clean up the hole that I had made and retap it.
Boy I felt soooooo defeated. After all of the major rebuild going well and to have the very minor part kick my read end!!!( LOL, no pun intended)

Re: What did you screw up today?

Did it last week, but the fix happened today. After pulling the intake and distributor, I replaced the parts and proceeded to drop the HEI cap into the radiator, knocking three tubes out of commission. Turns out it saved me a lot of trouble later, the thing looked like swiss cheese when I pulled it out...

Re: What did you screw up today?

I did a good one today. I was replacing a windshield in my 72 with one from LMC. They said to install the gasket on the pinchweld, then install the glass. It seemed correct as I've installed several windshields in my 77 since I bought it new, and that's the way I've always done it. Well, I cracked it trying to get it in. Luckly a local glass company had one in stock and they're open till noon on Sunday. It was also over a hundred dollars cheaper than LMC too. I installed it with the gasket on the glass, but now I'm having trouble getting the chrome insert in the rubber. Anyone know a trick to getting the chrome in?
