Looking through these forums, most the trucks have a lot more rust in between the panels.

I used this guy's kit. Being an ironworker by trade, he actually trial-and-errored until he perfected a kit. Then used the final product to build an iron pattern he uses to reproduce several a year, during off-seasonal times at regular job. BTW:some 'vintage-parts suppliers' sell a too-thick glass to fit factory seal/setup/opening; they sell you a dual-pane glass that will NEVER install. Back glass does NOT use a dual-pane design--rather they use a much thinner, tempered glass that breaks into 100's of tiny non-sharp chunks if in a collision. My 1st order came as a dual-pane; when I called vendor & they investigated, they credited my account, incl. s/h, & told me to do whatever I wished w/the glass, as it cost them more to ship back than the glass cost them! GREAT customer relations--esp. their absorbing s/h!

Are there DETAILED instructions somewhere that explains step by step how to remove the inner BBW panel from a donor truck cab?

Where to cut, which spot welds can be chopped loose and which have to be drilled out and any hidden problems a guy might run into?

Did u follow up w/the Google search? I merely selected just one of the many 'hits' to show an example of what's out there. I recall when doing mine that I temporarily saved several descrip's. of various methods to remove donors as well as install them, but unfortunately lost them.

I--really my retired body man and I together--ultimately decided that buying that kit was more cost-effective than going thru the labor using a donor truck; thus he tried this kit for the 1st time. He(body man)had done several conversions using donors earlier while actively working. Told me, after mine was done, that he'd use the kit again if he ever did another one as it was easier plus he could get a much better final fit. You really should seriously look into this guy's kit! BTW: I have no monetary interest in his product; have had only one experience buying from him.

*Caveat: whether u use this guy's kit, or use a donor, be sure the rear glass u get is the thinner, tempered one; a regular, safety-glas(double-pane with glue/resin between) is much too thick and really is more dangerous when involved in a wreck. Where the tempered one will shatter into many tiny 'harmless' bits, the safety-glas will break into larger shards that are more prone to cause serious cuts.

Ok...well im fixing to tackle my sbw here soon...but I have real bad cancer above the upper left portion of the window....so im thinking about cutting out the entire back half at the factory seems top and bottom , removing the roof skin cuz it needs to be replaced and so I can get at the spot welds on the factory seam above the Window.. and just remove inner back skin.....any advice or tips from you guys would be greatly appreciated..

I did the roof skin removal, allowed me to insulate the inner and outer roof skins, and to por 15 them, and to fill the seams on the gutter (welded and filled), and also redo the roof ditch with seam sealer which always needs done on these trucks anyways.

Now only if the newer windshield gaskets didn't leak after all that work...

I just completed a BBW conversion. I came across an issue installing my new inner panel that I don't recall anyone else mentioning during their conversions.

Anyone that's done this conversion will know that there is no way to see how the window recesses on the inner and outer panels line up with each other. When trial fitting the inner panel, I ran a black sharpie along the inside edge of the window opening onto the inside of the outer panel. After removing the new inner panel I found that they didn't line up very well. If I would've went ahead and welded around the window, then trimmed the outer panel, I would've ended up with very little space for the rubber molding on one end, and too much at the opposite end.

I'm not sure if this off-centre problem was caused by my weld repairs along the top edge, or due to collision damage caused to the donor truck... but here's what I did to check that the inner panel is centered.

After applying the panel glue to the inner panel, getting it into position, and clamping along the door jambs... leave the window lip unclamped for now. Reach your hand up behind the inner panel in both of the cab corners. You will easily be able to feel whether the inner panel is flush with the outer panel. Mine wasn't, so I put a clamp on the side that needed to be pulled to even things out. The clamp was place in the area where the Sail Panel trim would mount. Once everything was flush and even, put some clamps around the window opening and weld 'er up.

Hopefully, this will save someone some grief in the future.

If I understand you correctly, you were referring to the alignment from side to side or on the horizontal plane.

I definitely see how that one dimension could be off a bit pretty easily. The "B-pillar" or "sail panel" area, still has a fair amount of flex as they wrap around to the door openings.

I did a Big Back window swap on a friends Ford truck last year and it was much the same, but the outer sheet metal was needed as well.

Yes, that's what I meant. Hopefully it saves a future bbw swapper some grief.
