Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
It's got a GM HEI in it. Looks like a big BOP or maybe a Caddy.

Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
Only pic i've got of the motor. It was covered under the hood. I hope the motor is worth something and not a boat anchor.

Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
Itsa 500 Cadillac, 74-76 years probably. Makes great power, clean it up and leave it in there, nothing wrong with that.

Oh... it's a boat anchor... a boat anchor that will make damn near 500 lbft of TQ!

Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
I don't know about value... I know it costs an arm and a leg to rebuild one, and I think Edelbrock is the only one that makes an aftermarket intake for them. You can damn near shave off 200 pounds by replacing the cast iron intake with an aluminum unit.

Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
I concur in that I do think it is a mid 70's 472 Caddy. Great motor that makes a lot of low RPM power. As far as value???? probably low very low unless you find someone restoring an old Sedan DeVille. I would yank it and put a SBC back in the truck.

Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
yep, mid 70's 472/500 cadillac. not worth any real money. expect very easy burn outs and if you drive it real easy it'll get 7 to 8 mpg.

Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
Back in 99 I was driving around in a 76 Eldorado convertible with the 500 in it. I had a guy want to buy the car from me for the engine, said it was for a dragster. Wanted to pay me about $1500. The car was worth more than that so I sent him packing.
Right now on eBay I just saw a full 500 asking $1699 and a core bare block asking $350. Also a bunch of rebuild kits for the 500. I wouldn't write that engine off so quickly. |

My brother and I had a 472 we stuffed in a '70 highboy. It had 130,000 miles on it and not even a hint of a lip at the top of the cylinder. The blocks had a really high nickel content. You know it was a 472 that powered the fastest gasoline powered vehicle right? |

Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
the reason i say 74-76 500 is the 472 was done in 74, and with the eloctronic ign showing up in 73-74, it is just a good guess. Of course the only real way to tell is to dissassemble and check it out. I am attaching this page here for some pretty good Cadillac engine reading.

Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
Keep it in there if it's running ok. It took work to put it in,it's not all that uncommon of a swap, when folks get educated they usually like it,and it'll take some effort to swap back...even if you have an engine sitting ready to toss in.

Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
Big problem is hopping one up. Last time I looked any performance parts were bank. Great motors but take alot of money and work to make any real RPMs. Not a big deal if the truck has high gears in it but would probably not be your friend with a set of 4.10s. I want to say that the valvetrain needed attention for anything past 4200 RPMs. If the truck is a stick the bellhousing is worth a ton of money to the right person as the 472/500 never had a stick option. I would leave it and enjoy it till it blows.

Re: Dodge motor in a chevy? Help please?
I had a '71 Eldorado convertible with a 500. It got 12 mpg no matter fast or slow, hot or cold outside.
