Outer Axle slinger woes

Can't find this part anywhere. Apparently, the outer axle was enlarged in 73 and those are easy to find, but the 70-72 aren't I have a 72 axle.

Here is the part I'm looking for, should be part #47 in the parts breakdown below. Napa PBK1 used to include this part but now it doesn't. Does anyone know the spicer or GM part number? Or what other vehicles had the same axle shaft yoke diameters???

Re: Outer Axle slinger woes

There are two different GM and Dana part numbers listed in the GM parts catalog. Also they are shown on the exploded views but not listed by part number anywhere in Dana's X510-8DSD parts catalog.

From what I am reading there was a running change in 72. Early axles had different inner and outer slingers then they changed to the same part # for both the inner and outer slingers/deflectors.

Thanks Tim, that change in 72 rings a bell with what I was reading awhile back. the odd thing is I think the 73+ were still different since the ones I have here are way to big for either the inner or outer. I will try going through GM now that I have the PN's

Rob, I need the outer ones, which are a bit larger than that inner.

Re: Outer Axle slinger woes

So GM parts direct.com says the inner/outer 6273934 is available, but that is the part I have here (according to the Dana #) and its too large.

unfortunately, they don't list 3979678 as being available

this is the exact info I am looking for on the front bearings. I have a 72 K20 Suburban and was needing part numbers. Mine seems to be a Jan 72 build so not sure when the changes happened.

Any chance you could post the part numbers for the hub seals/bearings, axle shafts and u joints?

Thanks

Re: Outer Axle slinger woes

Are you referring to the steel sleeves on the axle? I have a BK1 kit from NAPA and it has the sleeve in it, here's the pic's of the content.

I'll also add, when i took my front end apart (72 Dana) my hubs had a standard lip seal on the inner part of the hub, Part # Nat 472397. I had a steel sleeve on the axle that looked to be the same steel sleeve in the BK1 kit.

I had to buy new hubs too so they included the inner needle bearings and small rubber seal. I ended up reusing the steel sleeves on the axle and the Bronze washer, plus the Nat 472397 seals.

Have a read of posts 19, 21 and 42 in my build thread ( link below), 42 shows how my old bronze thrust washer fit inside that steel sleeve.

Here are the tools to help yourself to exactly what you want to see.

Dana's X510-8DSD parts catalog.
http://www2.dana.com/pdf/X510-8DSD.pdf

For the GM part numbers the parts wiki is an easy search if you know your way around and have the BOM number off the axle.

http://www.gmpartswiki.com/query

Below shows the drop boxes to get directly to the P&A72TL.
In the "Query String" box just fill in a group number.

Found that 3979678 is a supercession part number in digging. It rolled from 3965130 effective 8-71. Didn't have any luck there either. :-(

Re: Outer Axle slinger woes

In '72 there was a 1st and 2nd design. There is an axle number (on long tube) and you need to know that. If you are above or under a known axle# determines 1st or 2nd design. My '72 is 1st design.

Re: Outer Axle slinger woes

Thanks guys. Good info.

Below is a photo of the different slingers with the Spicer PN's and diameter of the seal region. I am not sure on the PN on the 71/72 one but I can tell you it is the same on a 71 and 72 axle I have here, so my 72 must be the early one. I suspect it is the 34784 (which I have not found anywhere yet) but am not positive.

Now that's interesting, can you tell me the OD of the slinger where the seal rides? Your BK1 is just like the old NAPA PBK1, not the now stripped down version they sell now, as seen below.

Here is the new PBK1, no slinger and a large seal (2nd pic) that I think is only used on 73+

Re: Outer Axle slinger woes

Here is how I am going to run the new parts and reuse the bronze washer. Seal 19992 cross references with an original that I took out. I think the small seal is in the right place? Seems like it given the 19992 seal keeps the grease in the inboard side of the needle bearing. Almost feels like its not needed if the whole shaft/inside of spindle is all well lubed with grease.

The reason to smear grease is just to minimize rust on the parts.

Ya know what bothers me about my thread now? i posted that i did use the V seal but i know i used the Nat 472397 on the inside of my hubs so it makes using the V seal impossible, plus i still have the BK1 kits .. Humm..

When i was dealing with this issue i do remember the NAPA guy was working off a parts breakdown and did a bunch of cross referencing and he also came up with the same National seal i ended up ordering The problem is i cant recall which breakdown we were working with. Whoever installed the seals in my hubs before me totally destroyed the part number so i ended up just measuring the hub ID and the slinger sleeve OD and did a lot of calling around. I think i also called the replacement hub manufacture. And i think Rock Auto may have come up with the seal number as well.

Informational thread.
