WTB/ISO 67-72 Chevy/GMC 4X4

Roggy, not computer 'literat enough to do a link but just this evening found a '72 1/2 ton 4x4 auto in the Wichita, Ks. craigslist. A bit on the rough side with some rust and mis-matched sheet metal color but at $4,000 seems like a possibility? It is in the car/truck for sale section, just popped up this evening.

The guy says it rides like a lumber wagon. I wonder what that means?
Do you think it would be drivable back to Cave City? It doesn't look like it has any tail lights. I don't have a car hauler. I appreciate you checking for me. Since I'm not a mechanic, should I wait and find one with tail lights?
What's your thoughts?
PS. I've never looked in the car/truck section before. I've just been looking for "chevy 4x4" in the For Sale section. There seems to be more or different trucks in the car/truck section. Thanks for telling me about it.

That translates to me into, I'm used to driving a late model truck that rides like a car and this old Chevy with leaf springs at all four corners, rides like a dump truck (or lumber wagon).

This one is a decent deal. As long as you are going to drive as is. If you want to get body fixed and painted will cost more than the truck not including any mechanical refreshes that could be needed here and there. Don't forget it is 4x4 and hard to find.

I think it is a good deal. I just don't know how I would get it home without tail lights.
As I stated before, I have a limited budget. I might be able to get the tail lights fixed and some minor repairs but I don't know how I would get it home.

Being as the truck has no tail lights it may be an easy fix and but it may require a bit more than bulbs and lenses. Really hard to say. Don't think it would be advisable to try a drive home without the lights for that distance. With no car hauler, possible to rent one? Some obstacles to overcome in getting it home but if you are set on a '71-'72 4x4 as you have found they are not on every corner waiting to be purchased. I had three 67-72 2wd trucks before I found my 4x4. Always wanted one and finally found a '71 which required a fair amount of work. Some I did, some I farmed out.

When I bought my '71 4x4 it was rough as a cob, rode hard and put away wet many times. Only original sheet metal to the truck is the cab on the frame. Over the years replaced the bed and tailgate, both doors, both inner and outer fenders, the hood, inner and outer rockers, cab supports, cab corners, swapped from 4x4 std to 4x4 auto. Loved my std. 4x4 but being almost 67 years young and bad knees is not a good combination with a stiff clutch to push. All this did take time and money but the end result was and still is worth it. Hardly a week goes by when I'm driving it that I don't get some one asking "your 4x4 for sale?" Answer is always a firm "Nope, but thanks for askin' "

Keep your options open, contact the seller and ask LOTS of questions. Main question for sure is: Does the truck have a good clear title and the cab VIN number matches the title. Buying a truck with a mis-matched title and VIN number invites a lot of head aches down the road. Can be cured with effort but before everything is good on title and VIN, DO NOT put a lot of money into it.

Just some thoughts and I hope you make some decisions that are good for you in your search. Good luck.

Thanks for sharing all about your experiences. I wish I had the money to just buy what I would like to have. I have found a few in the 10K - 15k range that would have worked but I'm short on the funds.
As you probably have seen, I'm 63 (be 64 in a few months) and I've never had the opportunity to work on engines or do body work. I'm not afraid of trying just with some of my past experiences it usually will cost me more than if I would have had someone else do it. I wish I had your experience. Thank you also for your advice and knowledge.
There have been several guys share there thoughts on this blog? And I hope they read this because I want them to know, I really appreciate their input. I wish one of you lived closer so we could meet and discuss these things better.
Like I also said, I hope to find a 70's truck soon so I can enjoy it like you fellas have.

Hey Roggy,
Maybe offer the guy asking price if he'll put the tail lights back in it and hook them up. It really shouldn't be that difficult as long as the wires are there and he has the lights. Just a thought. Let him know your intentions are to drive it home. Good luck.

How's this one,and its in Arkansas. If you got serious about it I'd do some due diligence on the truck. Maybe a knowledgeable board member from your area could help you check it out. I'm also sure their is wiggle room on the price.
