Take the time to build it yourself, you can hone the cylinders with a $25 honing tool.

Stock pistons, rods, and crank, freshly honed cylinders, new bearing and rings and you may be in it for $250. Put your valve train and AFR's (although AFR's are usually associated with more costly builds) on it and roll.

If it lasts 100,000 miles...great. If not, then you can build it again, and add a few more goodies each time you do.

Good luck.
This guy knows what hes talking about .. I found a complete 1998 350 in a chev pick up at a junkyard for $50. Cracked it open found some mint uncut 4.0 inch bores. Threw $1000 at it and rebuilt it myself now I have a *****ing roller cammed 350 with nice even 150 psi in each cylinder. Its an expensive hobby but costs can be minimized with a little know how and common sense.

It's a lust that won't be satisfied by ball-honing and sticking new bearings in an old four-bolt block that you found at the scrap yard. It's gotta be trick!

And I'm not saying it's a bad thing, as I felt that way once. Now I'm more about getting all of my boring old mundane parts to worth together as a team. But I know the feeling... I was just blessed with youthful poverty so I could never indulge it!

Now I could afford a billet block and I'd trade it all for 21" of vacuum :-)
It's true lol

I'm trying to spend as little on parts for this short block as possible because I need the money to buy the twin turbo kit and the cam that's going to work well with a good amount of boost. I have a feeling my current 350 is on its last leg, and I've always wanted to have a turbo (or two lol) on a V8.

This may be the route I go, but I'll need to put some forged pistons in it.

Here's mine from yesterday, I was working on the intake piping. Under $1000 invested outside the motor, cheap eBay turbos and headers and pipes and valves.

I don't know, this motor is just over 8:1 and I'll run CP16 race gas, so I'm hoping it'll take 16psi. My engine builder friend said "as long as it stays out of detonation" it'll take whatever you can throw at it, more or less... I had this motor running normally aspirated in my '69 Camaro for 10 years, so it's a little old and has some blowby by seems stout in all other respects.

There's sure a lot of cheap stuff on eBay! All of that aluminum 3.5" pipe, the clamps, the couplers, and the rest of the pipe still in the box was under $200, whereas you can spend that on someone's intake tube if you're not careful. If it's a common piece, you can find it dirt cheap on eBay usually.

Its the guys who are blessed with poverty that innovate this sport -(if thats what you wanna call it).

Technology and innovation are driven through dissatisfaction. Knowing what you would like, but not being able to afford it forces you to "invent" alternate routes.

I saw a video on youtube (don't remember the title) where a guy modified a Honda motorcycle carb to fit his chevy inline 6 250. To me, that is ingenuity.

Either way, with all the advice in this thread, I'm sure mr. turner is going to end up with an engine that makes him smile.

Re: Good line on a SBC short block?

Find a low mileage L31. They're cheap and around here you can buy the rusty whole truck for $500 easy and scrap the rest. Change cam, add a carb intake for a vortec and run an electric fuel pump and I bet for less than $1500 you are at around 400hp in a great running street engine. And if it blows up (it won't) build another one.
