Question cam shaft position sensor

I am having problems with my truck and the check engine light tells me that I need a cam shaft position sensor but I have already replaced it with a new one. If any one can be of help I would appreciate it. Also if any knows how the truck would react if this sensor goes out please let me know.

first:
What year is the truck? Engine? we need specifics to help.
You should see no effects of the sensor going out. Did you clear the codes after replacing the sensor?

Its a 97 with a 350. Yes I have had the code reset with a scan tool and also many times by just diconnecting the battery. Do you think that the timeing might be off? It did not do this until after I got it back from the transmission shop. I had the transmission rebuilt about three weeks ago and it was doing this when I got it back.

could be the timing. A lot of shops pull the distributor out to change trannys. There should be a mark on the back side of the distributor from the factory that shows where it should line up. You will have to use a mirror to see it. Also check that both plugs are plugged into the distributor.
Of course you could also have a bad cam sensor.
