Re: Slow Progress is better than No Progress.

Thanks for the encouraging words, HO455 and Joe! I had to do most of the final work on my own as my buddy got inundated with real work for real customers (the kind that pay the bills!). It was a confidence boost for me when I was able to stretch and fasten the fabric to all the panels by myself...and didn't miss the mark with even one staple!

I do want to thank member djolley for sharing his woody style headliner with all of us, as it was his design that got me going in this direction! You are appreciated very much, djolley!

Re: Slow Progress is better than No Progress.

It's a really great feeling to do something that others appreciate...Thank You pwdcougar; Leon; Bryce; Darrell and CG!

Yes, Leon...picture taking in a Suburban is difficult sometimes, but it was a super bright time of the day, so maybe I'll be able to get better ones?

Bryce...my hatch is still in metal fab, so the glass you gave me is safely stowed away under my bed! Maybe someday, I'll be able to show you my efforts in person as you are the closest member I know of?

My project is way way way behind schedule, but I'm hoping that there will be an acceleration of progress over the next several months and summer. We had to stop assembling the engine because Howards sent me the wrong camshaft. To their credit they reground a new cam and have sent it to me. It's in the pipeline for installation in early April. Eventually, I'll report on the Pro Flo 4 installation. I recall that you had an issue with fuel delivery having retained the original tank which resulted in a modification? Please keep us posted. I look forward to sharing more updates in the future. Cheers, Nick

Yep CG…here are a couple close-ups for you! My wife had a set of ceramic candy dishes, and I rescued one of them to make the rearview mirror. It’s kind of heavy and doesn’t like the adhesive type mirror mount, so I modified a ‘71 mount to carry the weight better.

Those Carryalls remind me of droopy the dog cartoon. So ugly they're cute though.

Re: Slow Progress is better than No Progress.

A year ago, I stripped my tailgate hatch down to bare metal after realizing how bad the rot was…not to mention, the hideous 30+ year old repair job that was hidden under bondo that was 1” thick in places!!! Well, it took me awhile to find someone willing to take on the job, and as it turned out to be the employee of a friend of a friend of mine, I never even met the guy! Talk about blind faith, huh? Anyway, I was hopeful that what I wanted done would be relayed to the body man correctly…then went to work on my headliner as I knew I was going to have to be very patient. Seven months later (the guy had a 40 to 50 hour per week regular job too), my friend delivered the finished product to me. I had asked for it to be covered in primer…but when I saw and felt how much effort he had put into it, I knew that I should have had him paint it too! I wouldn’t say that it is “show quality perfect”, but it’s way beyond ready for my needs! The guy was definitely a pro…so I had no problem handing over the $1500 he had asked for. Seems like a lot…but try to buy one in this great of shape!!! Now…to find the time to reinstall it, then fit the glass into the new rubber. It will be nice to have that large hole above the tailgate sealed up…even if only in primer!

Re: Slow Progress is better than No Progress.

That hatch looks great!

As far as paint you could run the truck by a commercial paint supplier like Industrial Finishes. They usually have a color scanner so they can scan the trucks paint and mix a close match. Then if you don't have a sprayer they can put in rattle cans for you and you can paint it before installing it.

Thanks for the input, HO455…that has been on my mind as well. I do already have rattle can availability for a color that nearly matches the original (I’ve used it on some interior areas just to mask some work I had performed…it’s actually hard to see the difference). I’m just not sure how a pristine looking painted hatch would look against the backdrop of the remainder of the Beach Burban??? The tailgate (bottom) is already mostly primer…so maybe if both were painted, it would look okay from behind??? In any case…I’ll post pictures when I make a little more progress.

Thanks, Kev…my friend told me that the body guy put sooo much time into it that he never wants a side job that intense again! Lucky for me that I started off with the worse piece…so we’ll see if he helps me out in the future with some of my minor issues???
