the rusty patina look?!

how in the world are these guys getting this?
i heard there was a paint with iron in it that rusts?

if it involves taking the spots you want down to bare metal and letting it naturally rust, how do you get it to bare metal?
a friend gave up trying with a flapper wheel on an angle grinder and then a wire wheel on a grinder then paint stripper.none of which worked.he never did finish.
any advice?im trying to do the hood, the cowl thing, parts of certain body parts.but this is trippin me out
