Unhappy Problem! Help!!!!!!

I just installed a new rebuilt 250 six cylinder with a 350 turbo in my sons truck. The problem is the rod from the column to the linkage seems to be to short. I have it at the very end and I am still a couple of notches off Park is were neutral is. Is the rod for a 6-cylinder longer than on a V-8? I measured the one on my V-8 truck and it is the same size but it has a couple of inches sticking through. HELP
