Question HEI Distributor

What is the best way to test the HEI Distributor to make sure everything is working properly? Reason I ask this, during all of the robbing of parts my nephew did, I think he swapped distributors on me. Is it possibly the gears are worn out? It's just not acting right. Doesn't seem to be getting the right amount of fire to the plugs, has a new rotary cap, and button, coil. well all new inside Just can't get it to time right. You can set it, and next time you start it it's off again. That's why I'm thinking maybe the gears are worn out. O it has a new timing chain and cam. Well, not new, but a couple of years old. Everything was working fine, before parts were stripped What would be a good cheap replacement for a 81 GMC Sierra Grande 305 SBC
