Swapping T221 for a NP205

Guys,
I have searched and read every post on replacing 221's and I dont understand why so many modificaitons would be required if the 205 came in trucks from 69 to 72. Almost everything else is interchangable so why would you need to reposistion carrier bearing's, relocation cross members 2inch's back etc. I read YukonJacks thread and its seem like a lot of work to replace in a 67/68 something that came in a 69-72. I am replacing what turned out to be a bad sm465 and am trying to decide to dump the 221 for a 205 that I have.
